Debunking Myths: Carbs are bad.
This is FALSE.
Carbs are one of the 3 macro nutrients that we need every single day. Our bodies require all 3 every day. They are: carbohydrates, fats, & protein.
Some people will cut out carbs for quick weight loss but this is unsustainable and can be harmful. Our bodies require carbohydrates for energy & important functions. Carbs are the preferred source of energy for our brain!! Without carbs, you can expect to feel pretty crummy.
As with most things in life, we have a chose between the healthy & unhealthy carbs options. So it’s not about cutting them all out. It’s about choosing the right carbs.
Healthy Carbohydrates | Unhealthy Carbohydrates |
Low glycemic fruits: apples, berries, oranges
Whole grains: brown rice, quinoa, Ezekiel bread, steel cut oats Veggies: (preferably non-starchy vegetables) Example: Try to choose sweet potato over white potato |
Pastries, packaged snack foods, pretzels, baked goods, dessert, sweats, pasta, refined grains, high fructose corn syrup |
Our focus should be on healthy carbs & limiting our intake of unhealthy carbs. If you focus on the plate method you can’t go wrong.
½ of your plate should be filled with non-starchy veg, ¼ with starch (whole grains, potato, corn, peas), and the remaining ¼ a lean protein.
In summary: You need carbs! Include healthy carbs in your diet & balance it out with lean protein and fats.
