July 2016 Athlete of the Month: Doug Caceres

Congratulations to our July 2016 Athlete of the Month!

Doug Caceres

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

From Rockville, MD but I’ve spent most of my life in North Carolina. Growing up, I played every sport I could. I moved to Austin in 2011 after almost 6 years in the Marine Corps. I have loved every moment of being here. While in the military I obtained my AAS in Aviation Tech. I have basic certification as a EMT and massage therapist certification as well.

What brought you to CrossFit?

A friend introduced me to CrossFit in 2008 during my first deployment to Iraq. Upon returning from overseas, I went back to my unhealthy ways, smoking and slacking. But last year I realized I needed to curb my unhealthy habits, I joined CrossFit Hays with Sadie Curran, she has pushed me from the beginning to attend classes.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

I’ve been doing CrossFit on and off for a few years, I started at CrossFit Hays last October, so about 9 month now.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?

It’s been the best 9 months of my life. As I have knee and back issues from a blast, my back has been always my main concern. As I went through it all, my back is much stronger, am able to deadlift almost twice my bodyweight and am proud of my achievements.

Favorite CrossFit lift/movement?

Any barbell activity, Olympic variations, cleans, deadlift, overhead squats. and snatches.

Least favorite CrossFit lift/movement?

I’d rather do burpees than thrusters.

Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit.

Handstand walls, do more RX workouts, body weigh snatch.

Do you have any advice for someone who is just starting CrossFit?

Don’t be intimidated, and if you are unsure about something, ask one of the coaches. I have found all the coaches and members to be helpful and supportive. I try not to worry too much about being the last one to finish or get too disappointed if I have a less than perfect day. Even on my
bad days I walk out feeling accomplished.
